Barrhead Gala Day 1977.

Barrhead in June 1977 was a busy month for the town with a full calendar of Gala events. Saturday the 4th was the Gala Day proper in the Cowan Park which was preceded by the now familiar parade of floats led by the Neilston Pipe Band and local majorettes. The bonniest babies took to the Band Stand for judging while the more rigorous Tug O' War got underway. In the pitches both rugby sevens and boy's football teams were competing for the main trophies while the gentle art of bowls was played out on the bowling green. The following weekend, pipe bands decended on the field to take part in the Pipe Band Championships and the youngsters were not left out as Highland dancing and fun sports events entertained the crowds. Outwith the park and throughout the fortnight pub teams were competing in the darts and dominoe competition and cyclists took to their bikes in the Annual round Barrhead Race. One of the highlights of the Gala was the veteran football match which drew a large crowd at Dunterlie Park. Pictures by Stephen Mansfield
